Map of Mithila

Mithila, also known as Tirhut, Videha or Mithila, is a historical region in northern India and southern Nepal. It is primarily associated with the Maithili language and culture, which has a rich history of literature, music, dance, and art.

The Mithila region is believed to have been the center of the ancient Mithila Kingdom, which was ruled by the Videha dynasty. The region has a long and rich history, with references to it being found in ancient texts such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Mithila is also known for its unique art form, which is called Madhubani painting. It is a style of painting that originated in the Mithila region and is characterized by its bright colors, intricate designs, and use of natural materials.

In modern times, Mithila has been divided into two parts: the northern part is located in Nepal and the southern part is located in the Indian states of Bihar and Jharkhand. Despite the political division, the Maithili language and culture continue to thrive in both countries.
